The Kawaza Primary School is situated in the Luanga Valley , in the local area of Chief Nsefu.
This has been a huge success, and a great testament to the energy and dedication of Jo Pope of Robin Pope Safaris. The two 3 room classroom blocks that Romilly built allow the school to accept another 480 students per year. The contribution made possible by the generosity of Romilly's donors, Jo says, also made a huge impact on the level of donations from other donors. ‘It really had an enormous multiplier effect'.
The plan was to refurbish some of the buildings and to build new classrooms, which Romilly's Foundation agreed to pay for. This cost Romilly's Foundation in the UK and her Association in France , between them £22,000 sterling. The work was ably supervised by Jo Pope of Robin Pope Safaris, who have supported Kawaza Primary School since 1988. The buildings were completed in 2005 .
The school now has 18 classrooms. There are six computers powered by solar roof panels. As well as the curriculum pupils take part in sport, Science Club, HIV/AIDS awareness, choir, Chess and Red Cross. There is a Conservation Club and a patch of land where children can learn to grow vegetables and learn about nutrition. 90% of local people are subsistence farmers. Conservation workshops teach the children about the environment and especially the importance of trees to their way of life.
Jo Pope reported in November 2009 that work had started on the new library at Kawaza and that the Katapilla community school was almost finished.
